The smart museum as a living research lab - Abstract

Nowadays, we are slowly moving towards living in “smart environments”, that offer us access to a large variety services from anywhere at any time. The museum is not an exception. In the framework of the PIL project, which I have directed at the University of Haifa as part of a long lasting set of Israeli-Italian collaboration projects, a “Living Lab” has been developed, already at the early 2000s. A museum visitors’ guide system was developed for the Hecht museum, located at the University of Haifa. It was available for visitors on a daily basis for over three years and served two purposes – as a visitor’s guide for visitors and as research tool. Since the official end of the project, until this very day (for more than 20 years), the Hecht museum continues to serve as a living lab for exploring the potential of novel ICT to enhance the museum visit experience. The talk will present an overview of studies and technologies explored over that period of time.

Prof. Tsvi Kuflik (University of Haifa) - Short Bio

Tsvi Kuflik is full professor of Information Systems, at the Information systems Department of the University of Haifa, Israel. Tsvi got his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Computer Science and PhD in Information Systems, all from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Prior to that Tsvi gained considerable industrial experience as software developer, team leader and project manager for about 20 years.

Since arriving at the University of Haifa in 2004, his research has focused on Intelligent User Interfaces – focusing on supporting individuals and groups in Ubiquitous Computing Environments and, more specifically, on problems related to Ubiquitous User Modeling – how to track, monitor and model users (and groups) in these environments and how to provide them with continuous context aware and personalized services based on their models. In recent years Tsvi has started to work also on algorithmic transparency – how to make systems that apply AI techniques understandable to their users. He is also working on digital humanities – applying state of the art ICT to humanities research. Tsvi is a distinguished ACM scientist and a senior IEEE member.
